Resumo | For the conventional powder processing, the state of powder agglomeration plays a decisive role, affecting all of the important processing steps. The handling, forming, and sintering behaviors are profoundly influenced by the state of powder agglomeration. The aggregation and agglomeration state predominate for powder particles finer than 10 Ým under dry conditions. The most important characteristic is the nature of the adhesion mechanism of the powder particles. This can vary from weak forces easily overcome by mechanical or hydrodynamics action (aggregates) to solid bridges between the primary particles (nanostructured particles) of the powder (agglomerates). Ceramic powder compaction by pressing requires aggregated or weak-agglomerated powders to obtain high dense compacts and consequently dense sintered ceramic body. In this work powders with different particle size distributions was compacted by isostatic pressing. The powder and compacts were characterized by mercury and nitrogen porosimetry, BET and SEM. Analysis of X-rays diffraction peaks was used to determine the particle size (diameter). The Scherrer method was used on the breadth of individual peaks to obtain the estimated average particle size. The results showed that all aggregated and weak agglomerated powders were composed by nanoparticles (average particle size < 100nm). Nanoparticle aggregates and weak agglomerates were destroyed during the pressing stage conducting to a increase of the packing degree of the powder particles. This behavior was reported by other authors that used others characterization techniques of the green compacts. The study indicated that the combination of the porosimetria techniques and SEM supplies important information about the nanoparticle aggregation/agglomeration state and the capacity of accommodation of these particles (powder compaction ability). |
